So when I read 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 I focus on one thing and one thing only… God provides a way out. He may not make it obvious to a gamer like me only because He knows what I like. I was breed to use my wits to fights big nasty boss monsters in glorious technicolor. I love a good conflict and I get giddy just thinking about how to solve a problem. So he lets me work for my escape.
The truth is, we humans often forget we are fighting demons on a daily basis. We fail to see the galactic struggle of good and evil and instead see simple mundane events like our own mistakes and temptations. But there IS a conflict to be faced, and it’s the gamers who know best how hard we need to fight.
When I face a sinful temptation, God says it’s not too much for me to bear and that He has provided a way out. It’s like saying to your child, “I’ve hidden your favorite toy somewhere in your room. Can you find it?” Some children might feel discouraged or challenged. But gamers (remember, we are breed at very young ages) see a game to play. So too, God wants us to work for our victory so that it is all the more sweeter when we reach it.
If there was a challenge to walk through a door that was two feet in front of you, you could do it easily. But would you feel like you accomplished anything. However, if the challenge was to jump through a door suspended over a gaping chasm, suddenly the effort required is greater. How would you feel if you made a valiant leap and scored the goal by a hair?
I am a gamer. God knows this and this is why He gives me a way out which may be out of the obvious for me. If I need to avoid a sinful temptation, perhaps I call a brother… but then there is no answer. So perhaps I need to find a book to read… but nothing holds my attention. And only after another few tries do I realize that I had spent too much time thinking about it and I must now work on dinner. Temptation successfully avoided. Good work me. Dinner is bound to be delicious tonight.
I am a gamer. And God loves gamers too.
